I'm going through some of my older samples, and had things like: <group tags="hembra open close"> or <group tags="note">

I'm guessing those were deprecated?

Hello Jon,

No, I really don't think so.

I am using group tags quite extensively and if they didn't work, my instruments would not function properly.

I do think your tags should be separated by commas though.

Here is an example:

    <group name="Bourdon8" seqMode="random" seqLength="5" tuning="0.0" attackCurve="-100.0" decayCurve="100.0" releaseCurve="100.0" trigger="attack" tags="expression,Bourdon8,trig_atk">

They are no longer listed in the documentation, that's what made me wonder. Tags are in other spots, just not the group
You are absolutely right, reading the latest documentation, it's not clear at all that a good deal of the attributes described for the sample element can also apply to the group element.
As far as I am concerned, a lot of programming gimmicks I could grab were directly inspired by other presets, "DecentSampler-Sample-Library-Examples-1.0" in particular and some other free instruments.
